Scientific Facts in the Bible

My grandmother lived until 1990 and saw men walking on the moon and the Space Shuttle go into space. It’s hard to imagine that her mother was killed as the result of a horse and buggy accident in 1907. Her mother could have never imagined the astounding leaps in technology that would happen over the 100 years following her death. Imagine if you had visited my great grandmother 100 years ago, and showed her an iPhone or any one of today’s modern marvels. One thing she would have known for sure: that technology came from outside of her world. In the same way, the following scientific truths written in the Bible thousands of years before man discovered them, had to come from outside of the writer's world.

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood" Leviticus 17:11

Up until 120 years ago, sick people where “bled,” and many died because of the practice, including George Washington, our first president. We now know that blood is the source of life, just as the Bible declared over 3000 years ago.

"[When dealing with disease] . . . he shall then wash his clothes and bathe his body in running water and will become clean." Leviticus 15:13

The Bible teaches that washing under running water is the proper way to deal with bacteria and disease. However, until 100 years ago, doctors washed their hands in a basin of still water, resulting in the deaths of multitudes. In 1845, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis successfully dropped the death rate of women delivering babies from 30% to 2% by simply insisting that doctors wash their hands before examinations.

". . . the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas." Psalm 8:8

Man discovered the existence of ocean currents in the 1850’s, but the Bible declared the science of oceanography 2,800 years ago. Matthew Murry (1806-1873) who is considered to be the father of oceanography, took God at His word and went looking for these paths. His book on oceanography is still considered a basic text on the subject and is still used in universities.

"For He draws up the drops of water, they distill rain from the mist, which the clouds pour down, they drip upon man abundantly."
Job 36:27-28

"All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again." Ecclesiastes 1:7

The hydrologic cycle was not fully accepted until the 16th and 17th centuries, yet 2,500 year ago, the Bible clearly describes how water cycles from the clouds to rain to rivers to oceans and back again.

The prophet Isaiah also tells us that the earth is round: "It is He who sits above the circle of the earth" (Isaiah 40:22). This is not a reference to a flat disk, as some skeptic maintain, but to a sphere. Secular man discovered this 2,400 years later. At a time when science believed that the earth was flat, is was the Scriptures that inspired Christopher Columbus to sail around the world.

In Genesis 6:15, God gave Noah the measurements for the 1.5 million cubic foot ark he was to build. In 1609, a Dutch ship was built after that same pattern (30:5:3), which totally changed ship-building. By the year 1900 every large ship on the high seas copied the shape of the ark.

3500 years ago, the author of the book of Job spoke of the earth “floating” in space when he wrote that “[God] . . . hangs the earth on nothing.” (Job 26:7) At that time, it was believed that the earth sat on the back of a large animal. Science didn’t discover that the earth hung upon nothing until 1650.

These truths prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the Bible is of supernatural origins. The Bible teaches that while men were used to pen the Bible, God is actually the author. How else could the writers have known these scientific facts thousands of years before man would understand them?
